I can't wait to give this card to someone and see their faces when they open it. But, I'm enjoying the card so much, it may be a while before I give it away. It's almost like an interactive toy, and, honestly, I'm easily entertained.
The outside looks innocent enough . . . look how fun that Big Birthday Candle stamp set is. It's a two-step stampin' set, which means we first stamped the candle in So Saffron ink, and then stamped the flame and outline of the stamp again with Basic Black ink.
It's the inside that has even more WOW factor and can just entertain me for hours.
I think my Hostess Club ladies (love them all!) were just a bit intimidated when they first saw what they were going to make. But eventually I think they were pretty surprised at how easily this card came together. At least know one ran screaming out into the street. The secret is the new Three Tier Cake Pop-Up Bigz XL Die, which, fortunately comes cuts out all the elements of the cake tier, including crease lines, and comes excellent instructions (with color pictures no less).
Thanks to the fan-tabulous Dawn Griffith for her inspiration with her card here. While it's incredibly easy to use, here are a couple of things the hostess club ladies and I learned about this pop-up die:
- After you cut out the paper with the die and before you adhere and assemble the cake tier, fold the paper at all the crease lines. This will break the fibers and train the paper to fold appropriately when you close up the card the first time.
- Watch for extra adhesive. If you have any extra glue sticking out, your cake might stick to itself when you fold the card closed.
- When you add the long strips of paper around the sides of the cake, pay attention to which side of the cake is the front and which is the back. Attach the long strips so that the seams are at the back of the cake.
As always, you can purchase the items used in this project on-line 24/7 by going here.
The recipe to make this delicious cake is:
Stamp Set: Big Birthday Candle (114924)
Paper: So Saffron (105118), Bashful Blue (105120), Certainly Celery (105125), Sahara Sand (105328), retired Sale-a-bration paper
Ink: Classic Basic Black (101179)
Tools, etc.: Scallop Edge punch (112091), Three Tier Cake Pop-Up Bigz Xl Die (116760), Dazzling Diamonds (102023) for the flames.
The pop-up die makes the skeleton of the cake but also adorable bride/groom images and candles. (We think the little guy figure could also double as "The Office" icon.)
If you purchase the Bigz Xl dies, be sure to also get the Extended Cutting Pads (113478) to make it easier to feed the die through the Big Shot.
